First off, all of these side effects are alot better than dying from cancer, so count your blessings and don't piddle in what your problems are now. If I were you, I'd be pretty thankful.. My mom had a masectomy just a week ago as well. Weight gain will generally only be cause becuase the drugs they give you will help up your appetite, since most cancer patient's don't have much of one. It's only to keep you healthy, but it doesn't mean you can't manage your weight. Don't eat like a cow, just eat healthily. And after chemo and such, you will probably stop menstrating but can't say for sure.. but generally, yes.

The truth is, if you can't laugh about it, then you're just going to cry over it. So incorporate your own ways to find humor and positivity in your situation, I know me and my mother have.

The best option is bio identical hormone therapy tailored to suit her requirements. I use estrogel, progesterone and testosterone. You need to have her seen by an endocrinologist.
I haven't had unpleasant side effects – as for the cancer risk it rises from 43 /1000 to 44/ 1000 which is a mathematical blip and the major studies have been rather discredited.
The chances of developing cancer rise with age – not hormones. The treatment will take about three months to fully kick in but improvements will be noticed very quickly.

There are some great herbal supplements that can work well (they certainly work for me).

Swiss Herbal Menopause Formula (I use the Extra Strength) has a lot of the different herbs and vitamins that seem to relieve the symptoms (hot flashes, mood swings, etc.) of menopause.
I didn't want to use hormone replacement therapy, so I tried a number of herbal supplements until I found one that worked for me. I don't get hot flashes anymore (maybe 1 or 2 a week), my mood doesn't swing up and down, and I can sleep at night (I take their Nighttime formula as well).
I also take extra calcium (that can help with sleep problems) plus a good 50+ multivitamin.
